Make your own ginger beer

Homemade Ginger Beer_1258025844203Well, that Vicks VaporRub post yesterday got me all nostalgic and got me thinking about other things that I associate with my childhood. One lasting memory is of my Dad making homemade ginger beer — making the ginger beer plant, dividing it up after making a brew and feeding it up for the next batch, the tops popping off the bottled ginger beer when he’d whipped up a particularly potent brew, but best of all is the memory of drinking it, lovely and cold, on a hot day.

Now, ginger is good for just about anything that ails you — my husband insists that it is at its medicinal best when encased in a good quality dark chocolate — including settling an upset stomach and easing joint pain. So, drinking ginger beer must be good for you, right?

You can find out how to make your own ginger beer on the Ladies Lounge blog (on the Web site of the Perth branch of the Country Women’s Association) and it’s a fascinating process that the whole family can get involved in.

Bottoms up!
