Sounds of Australia on the National Film and Sounds Archive

The National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) is a fascinating resource. Its collection of film and sound documents Australia’s history in a way that no museum could hope to and this site includes some of the highlights of its holdings.

The Sounds of Australia section of the NFSA’s site is particularly interesting. It brings together a collection of sounds that say something special about Australia and Australians, as nominated by the general public, then a panel of experts picks 10 to be added to the Sounds of Australia Registry each year.

The 10 sounds to be added for 2009 include the Vegemite jingle, a 1958 recording of Dorothea MacKellar reciting her famous ‘My Country’ poem and Yothu Yindi’ recording of ‘Treaty’. You can find the rest of this year’s additions here and click here to see the total list of sounds added since the collection was started in 2007.

You can start nominating iconic Australian sounds for consideration for 2010 now here.
